Notification Regarding a Death in CBP Custody
The following is a report on a death that occurred while the individual was in the custody of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in accordance with CBP policy and Department of Homeland Security reporting requirements.
Incident Summary
On October 25, 2024, at approximately 5:45 a.m., Border Patrol Agents (BPAs) encountered a Mexican citizen who was illegally present in the U.S. near the Santa Teresa Port of Entry. The man reported feeling ill, experiencing throat pain, and requested water, which was provided. At approximately 5:51 a.m., he was transported with five other individuals in a CBP vehicle. At approximately 5:58 a.m., while en route, the man became unresponsive. BPAs immediately initiated CPR. Emergency medical services (EMS) were contacted at approximately 6:01 a.m. and arrived at approximately 6:20 a.m., transporting the man to Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus (HPTC) in El Paso, TX. He was pronounced deceased at approximately 6:53 a.m.
Medical Examiner's Report
An autopsy performed on October 25, 2024, at approximately 11:17 a.m., determined the cause of death to be atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and the manner of death was ruled natural.
